特定の防爆構造を用いる爆発の可能性のある雰囲気で使用する電気機器に関する加盟国の法令の近似化に関する理事会指令79/196/EECを技術の進歩に適合させる1984年1月16日の欧州委員会指令84/47/EEC（OJ L 31、1984年2月2日、19頁）の効力は、ATEX指令94/9/ECが適用されるようになった2003年7月1日に終了した。しかし、εxマーキング（「イプシロン・エックス」又は「六角形」）の記述は、新たな法令では維持されていないものの、製造業者及びすべての利害関係者にとって指針として引き続き有用である。
The validity of the Commission Directive 84/47/EEC of 16 January 1984 adapting to technical progress Council Directive 79/196/EEC on the approximation of the laws of the Member States concerning electrical equipment for use in potentially explosive atmospheres employing certain types of protection (OJ L 31, 2.2.1984, p. 19) ended on 1 July 2003, when the ATEX Directive 94/9/EC became applicable; but the description of the εx marking ("epsilon-x" or "the hexagon"), although it has not been retained in the new legislation, remains useful as guidance for manufacturers and all the interested parties.
